The Cost of a “Small Exception”
Every system allows small exceptions.
Exceptions look small in isolation and structural in aggregate.
A quick adjustment. A one-time request. A reasonable deviation.
Individually, they feel harmless.
The system doesn’t break from one exception. It adapts to repeated ones.
What is allowed once becomes easier to allow again.
Over time, exceptions stop being exceptions. They become behavior.
And behavior becomes the system.
A system is not defined by its rules.
It is defined by what it repeatedly allows.
System quality is decided in daily tradeoffs, not declarations.
Drift is rarely one decision. It is the sum of tolerated exceptions.
