Never Say This to A Designer

As a designer, there are some things that we hear all the time from clients that make us cringe. While we understand that you may not be a design expert, some phrases and requests are just too ridiculous to handle. So, to save yourself from getting fired or ending up with a terrible design, here are 5 things you should never say to a designer:

  1. "Can you make it POP?" This phrase is perhaps the most common one that designers hear. What does "POP" even mean? Should the design be more colorful? Should it have a bigger font size? Unless you can give specific instructions, please avoid using this phrase.

  2. "Do your creative magic" As much as we love magic, it's not a real thing. Design is a process that involves research, analysis, and experimentation. If you want us to create something, we need to know what you want and what your goals are. Saying "do your creative magic" is not helpful.

  3. "I don't know what I want, but I want it to be amazing." This phrase is a designer's worst nightmare. Design is not about creating something that's just amazing, it's about creating something that's functional, effective, and meets your specific needs. If you don't know what you want, please take some time to think about it before approaching a designer.

  4. "Can you just copy this design, but make it different?" This phrase is not only insulting to the designer but also illegal. Designers put a lot of time and effort into creating original designs that meet their clients' needs. Asking them to copy someone else's work is not only unethical but also a violation of copyright laws.

  5. "Can you make it look like Apple's design?" We understand that you may admire Apple's design, but please don't ask us to copy it. Apple's design is unique and specific to their brand. If you want us to create something that's inspired by Apple's design, we can do that. But copying their design is not an option.

In conclusion, if you want to work with a designer, please avoid using these phrases. Instead, be clear about your goals, give specific instructions, and trust the designer's expertise. Remember, good communication and mutual respect are the keys to a successful design project.
